As I've heard it, there is eventually a catalyst that makes Luke change his behaviour (it comes with a plot relevant hair cut, natch).

Although, since I have been spoiled to hell and back, when I do play TotA I am going to know exactly why Luke acts like a dick, and probably forgive him for it.
