Just a detail here, but I don't think Vigarde's illness can have been all that sudden since Lyon mentions it in the flashbacks, which take place two years before the start of the game. And the emperor is supposed to have died one year later, according to Knoll.
Anyway, I agree that much of that analysis is spot on. It's not a very happy father-son dynamic at all. :/
