Yay rambling!

I don't remember where it came up, but somewhere anyone wondered how the male/female ratio in FE 8 was (Maybe it was me in reaction to someone saying that we have no female knight from Renais? I don't know. It doesn't really matter, honestly) It kinda bugged me that I didn't know concrete numbers so I had to make a little table:
Saleh (Caer Pelyn), Rennac (Carcino), Myrrh
That gives us: 43 characters from the countriesthat really count 8D Saleh, Rennac and Myrrh as the odd ones out. (Mostly because they have no "contrast" so to speak; they are the only ones coming from their respective homelands)
30 are male, 13 are female. Interestingly apart from Rausten (which has such a little number of characters anyway) EVERY country only has three female characters. Frelia still has only three even though it has theunfair advantage of being the country with the pegasi knights. However, it still looks better than Renais because the male:female ratio is better; 4:3 vs. 11:3. Grado lies between it with 7:3. Jehanna has almost the same ratio as Frelia with 5:3. (L'Arachel counts as much as a dozen "normal" persons anyway XD)
- Frelia has three female and one male soldiers; Moulder as a healer doesn't count as a soldier here since he doesn't do any actual fighting. Since they are the pegasi country, it's not surprising that the female soldiers are in higher positions (Syrene has a higher rank than Gilliam, I believe. It was never noted what Gilliam does when he is not fighting in that war, but it was said somewhere that Syrene had her own troupe before.)
- Renais looks pretty bad here, of course (andthis made me really wish that Seth had been a woman in the original because it looks awesome in my head 8DEirika/FemSeth, y/y?). It has no female soldiers; Neimi and Lute were both civilians. Renais has the "burden" to provide the Red/Green duo and the Jeigan (which should be female the next time >8D Oh yes), which traditionally are male, unfortunately. The rest is not excusable, of course.
(And maybe I'm just imagining it, but; somehow it feels like Eirika is kinda reknown for despising violence? I'm remembering it wrongly, probably, but didn't it seem that even people who didn't know Eirika personally remark upon her distaste of violence? Because that would be not only interesting and telling, but also strange. Feel very free to correct me here.)
- Grado has two female soldiers; a recruit and a general, quite a big contrast. Selena doesn't get a special treatment and no one seems to be surprised at her being a general. Though if I remember correctly, Amelia was slighted in Fort Renvall because she was a girl? It could be because Selena already proved herself and Viggy supports her.
- Jehanna has two badass ladies 8D I mean, female soldiers. I would count Ismaire as a soldier because they 1. have no official army it seems, 2. Ismaire is a swordmaster when you get her in the monster campaign so she seems to be able to fight (otherwise she would've been a NPC, wouldn't she?) Though I'm not sure if you could see Jehanna as a country where men and women are more equal. I believe we would need to know more about how Izzy came to rule alone, i.e. if it is normally, special, how people think about her, was it difficult for her to achieve rule.
- Rausten has L'Arachel. 'Nuff said. (And only Dozla as a male soldier).
I have no idea if I had a point or not. But I like ratios. Yay 8D
On a different but related topic:
Did you also notice that only Frelia and Grado (and Rausten, of course) have "court priests"? Moulder serves directly at court (and is obviously close to Hayden since he is introduced as a "most trusted vassal"). In Grado you have Father McGregor and Natasha, in a way. Renais and Jehanna don't have them (Renais doesn't have any healer, period. Artur can become a bishop later, but at the beginning he can't heal). Coincidence? 8D I don't think so~ Which reminds me that I have to put down my thoughts on Religion in Magvel.
Also, I was looking at my pirate AU stuff earlier. I really feel like doing a bit more research 8D
