However -- Lyon does get praised by his people. And he gets a lot of joy from helping them. Personally I feel like it was the combination of a lack of affection, and the absolute horror of what he knew would happen with Grado that caused him to finally collapse. If he had someone by his side who could help him - support him through the loss of his father, help him figure out
Also worth noting - if Eirika and Lyon were involved, Renais helping Grado escape the disaster wouldn't have been an issue, I don't think. Whereas the way they were, it was a matter of pride.
I mostly use this line of reasoning, not as HOW COULD LYON HAVE BEEN SAVED?!, but as a tie-in with my own feeling that pre-game requited twins/Lyon - at least, openly requited - is pretty much just not possible without some kind of AU.
