scarletmorning: (Happy fairy)

Alright~ Long post is long :D

This will be something like an essay (since I don't really know how an essay is defined) about medieval strategy. Not only because it's extremely interesting but because I and others can use this for fanfiction. And I have to correct myself. I thought for a while that people like Oswin or Kyle were unrealistic since they are commoner-gone-knights. It was possible, but it was a very hard way. But more on that later. :D Good, then let's start with a little summary.

If we want to talk about medieval warfare, we first have to know how the minds of those knights and lords worked. So this will be the first part.

Then I'll talk about tactics which in this context means; what did the structure of an army look like and what types of fighters there were.

Last but not least the strategy. Which, to be honest, is not much :D

(All informations in this text comes from one book written by Hans Delbrück. I recommend it but you need a lot of time to read it. Additionally I only use the section of the Middle Ages since this is the time frame that is relevant for Fire Emblem.)

4. Random facts, especially concerning Fire Emblem

a) I know that some people wonder, if the tactician can give his fighters orders during battle. Now I can say that at least in reality it was not possible. We have seen above that a battle was too chaotic and additionally the knights were lacking the discipline to accept orders.

b) Since the middle of the 12th century it was forbidden to have women in the camp. Though I think we all know that in reality there were no female warriors, don't we?

c) I have found the role model of those dancers and singers! In the 11th century a bishop had to gather a bunch of knights to kill some bandits. And during battle he prayed and sang for the knights to make them stronger and give them courage.

If you have any further questions or if you didn't understand my chaotic explanation (or because my grammar refused to be tamed), just ask. I will see if I can find an answer. :D
