I'm not in a too positive state of mind at the moment (am still searching for a good psychiatrist and had one a bit unpleasant talk with one. Nothing truly big, but it triggered a bit of my "my fault" mentality. I need to talk about that with my Ma later to get rid of it) so I want to distract myself a bit. I can't write at the moment (even though I so wish I could. Maybe I'll look through a few of old prompts or something) so I'll babble a bit about FE stuff.

One thing that I noticed when I read the FE6 script was the difference of mentality between Douglas and Cecilia. They were so blatantly different; Douglas fights for the king and Cecilia for Etruria. Not to say that Douglas doesn't care about Etruria but it seems to be clear that he feels like he swore loyalty to the king, then to country. Cecilia is the opposite. That prompted me to think about the motivation of other characters in similar positions.

FE6; Marcus serves the family more than country though they're on a similar level, I believe (in 6 and 7). Percival is torn, but in the end Mildain > Etruria. Murdock (I believe that was his name) obviously was all for Zephiel, as were other generals, I believe.

FE7; Oswin pretty clearly also is mostly sworn to the Ostian family. Wallace is tough but in the end probably places personal > country (am not too sure about it though). Vaida says that she is mostly sworn to Zephiel as well, I believe, and after the betrayal of Bern she "dislikes" it anyway.

FE8; Seth is pretty hard. I think it's a bit similar to Percival with a different outcome; in the end I believe Seth would probably choose country over king/queen. Duessel mostly has sworn loyalty to Vigarde, as is shown in his supports. He regrets his betrayal of Grado not as much as he regrets betraying Vigarde. It's still close though. Selena is similar to Duessel but a bit... extremer, if I may phrase it like that. Glen is hard, because I don't remember learning much about him, but he strikes me more as country > emperor in the end (with his doubting and stuff).
(We don't have any "generals" from Frelia, do we? Well, Gilliam would probably choose king > country, but eh, not too sure)

FE9/10; Geoffrey seems to be obvious on first glance, but I think he'd have major problems with deciding between country and queen. If Giffca counts as a general, then probably king > country. We all know who Zelgius loves/serves. If Tauroneo is still a general, well, with Pelleas it became a bit harder, but in the end he probably cares more about Daein. Sigrun is obviously all for Sanaki.

And now I can't remember any more generals.

This is interesting. I thought of discussing the country vs. king dichotomy myself, but you covered more ground than I would've been able to.

One thing I'd add is that Narshen was definitely out for himself over his king or country, heheh. You don't see that mentality much among the playable characters, though.

Hope you feel better soon :c

As for generals- I disagree about Duessel. There's a twinge of regret for Vigarde, sure, but his dialogue in supports and his decision to leave seem to place Grado above everything. Then again, this is hampered by the knowledge that Vigarde himself hasn't been around in some time. . . .

And agreed about Tauroneo. Given that he's able to kill Pelleas for the sake of Daein, it makes a lot of sense that he's more about his country than anything.

Percival though, yeah lol, no question, that's pretty blatant.

Aah I hope you'll feel better! orz If the psychiatrist is making you uncomfortable, it definitely seems like a good idea to find somebody else.

This is an interesting post, and I've given this a bit of thought before, too - in general, I think I prefer characters who care more for actual people than countries, which is partly because patriotism can be a little hard for me to relate to (with some exceptions). More personal motivations tend to make characters feel more interesting to me, I suppose. :)

(And um, personally, I think Geoffrey would choose Elincia over Crimea and... pretty much everything else. But I guess this opinion is mostly based on how he mentions seeing no point in living without her in one of his death quotes?)

I disagree with the outcome. In the end, should it come down to it, I think his loyalty to the twins would trump his concern for country. After all, he did leave the country on the command of his king to safeguard his heir (or heirs).

Selena - have to agree that she was loyal to Vigarde first and foremost. Such as that she restated her loyalty to the emperor even though he was not the one giving her the commands and marched off to her death. That was such a waste. :(
