I've said a few posts ago that I would rake up the script for characterisation bits about the brokings. And today I will tell you what I found and how I see the brokings and Ismaire and Mansel. But first, my ranking list 8D I love Hayden the most, Fado is second place and Viggy, Ismaire and Mansel are actually all on place three. Maybe you'll share my view after my "recap"~

Now, let's start with Fado:

We get most of his characterisation through other characters. Hayden describes him as stubborn, reckless, resolute, foolhardy and courageous; he also adds that Ephraim is very much like his father because he shows similar traits (and Eirika has his stubborness).

Eirika and Ephraim both remember their father as strong and brave. Especially Ephraim has great trust in Fado´s strength; he thinks his father would clearly outlive him. But Ephraim and Fado also had some communication problems; Ephraim tells us that his father never understood his desire to become the strongest fighter in Magvel. Eirika and Seth, however, show that Fado had nothing against Ephi´s wish to become strong; it was probably just the mercenary part that irked him (which is understandable; Eirika mentions that Fado always wished that Ephraim would become a strong king). It was probably the situation that Ephy wanted to rebel and do his own thing, even though his path in life was already determined. As a prince he doesn't have that much of a choice and even if he could've convinced his father to declare Eirika the heir of Renais, he still wouldn't have the option of becoming a mercenary. Fado knew that. They probably had this quarrel because Ephy "refused" to learn all the things he would need as a king (all that theoretical stuff that had nothing to do with lances). Still, both Eirika and Ephraim are shown to love and respect their father and Fado (during the short time we see him) was very concerned about the safety of his children as well. He seems to be a slightly strict but great dad.

Seth adds that he was valiant and a good leader. Fado knew how to talk to his subordinates and they seemed to have loved him. Maybe that was partially because Fado seemed to value strength and dedication highly (he treats Seth like a second son because Seth fulfills and values these things as well). His title in-game is after all "Peerless Warrior King". He is also known to care a great deal about his country´s and his men´s wellfare; in the prologue he tells the men to lay down their weapons because the enemy wouldn't kill them if they don't resist. Fado also doesn't flee with Eirika and Seth. He wants to take responsibility for his mistakes, even if he doesn't know yet if it is his fault. He knows that he is not perfect and has his limits but he doesn't run away from this knowledge. He is pretty self-aware.

And he is awesome.

Now on to Hayden:

The first thing we learn about Hayden is that he is known for doting on his daughter (You probably didn't know that I love doting parents characters, but now you do~) He cares about both Innes and Tana but he mostly shows concern about Tana´s safety. He seems to have more confidence in Innes´ abilities than he has in Tana´s. That is probably connected to his doting and a certain protectiveness. The Tana/Syrene C support also suggests that he is a bit emotional when it comes to Tana. He is openly sad when he hears of Tana´s flight (another reason why I love him <3). His children do respect him most of the time, though you could argue that since Tana ignores his orders, she has a little less respect of him. It sounds probably worse than I mean it. It's just like this: Tana is very stubborn, is characterized by her brother as spoiled (and being used to getting her way) and Hayden is shown four times to give in to stubborn people (Eirika, Tana, Innes, Ephraim). I would guess that Hayden was not strict enough with her when she did something stupid. She's learned that her father gives in if she is stubborn enough. Tana does fear his anger though; in her A support with Innes she remembers the story from her childhood and how her father yelled at her and in her supports with Syrene she contemplates if her parents will ever forgive her (this is the proof that her mother is still alive. Finally, parents that are still alive~) Hayden doesn't seem to get angry easily -- he's very calm in the game -- but if he does, he can be scary. It also implies that it takes some time until he forgives (this could of course be coloured by Tana´s perception of him as his daughter, who also complains that Hayden is unfair when he forbids her to put herself in danger). Now Innes respects his father´s knowledge and abilities highly. Hayden seems to be his role model (mostly taken from the Innes/Gerik supports).

In his conversations with the main characters Hayden seems to be a very calm, level-headed, compassionate and intelligent man. He's also well-informed on what is going on (it's his spy network after all. He's a bit sneaky, but we already knew he's the ninja bro king). Hayden also cares about his friend´s family and wants to help Eirika in any way. This shows that he is loyal to his friends; he could exploit the situation and take Renais for himself but he seems to have more interest in restoring justice.

The course of the game suggest that he is a great tactician as well; he is the one who directs Frelia´s army while the main characters derp around elsewhere. The fact that Innes looks up to him supports this as well. He is the "Sage King". And awesome~

Onwards to Viggy (no, I can't call him Vigarde anymore because I always type Viagrde):

We don't find out much about him. Various persons from Grado and the twins describe him as peace loving, abhoring violence, honest, just, compassionate, kind, calm, loyal and generally as not back-stabbing. He is adored by his people because he does very nice and generous things for them (Selena/Myrrh conversation in Ch. 13). He cares very much about his country as well; Lyon tells us that Viggy is a workaholic when it comes to matters of state and doesn't mind his health enough (doesn't sleep enough and is always tired).

Many of his subordinates describe Viggy as a fatherly figure who seems to be interested in the wellbeing of his soldiers (similar to Fado; though Fado is not "fatherly". I'd more put him as "a bit equal, older superordinate"). Especially Cormag and Glen call him that. Selena also explicitly says that Viggy has no interest in extending Grado´s territory. He wants to spread peace all over Magvel and works hard for this vision. Violence and conquering were the last things he would do.

All in all he is more or less the opposite of his appereance in-game.

Now let's move on to Ismaire:

Ismaire seems to be a very strong person; she rules Jehanna alone, has lost her husband and son but still goes on. She had Carlyle as a support and she said that it took her some time to get better but in the end she fully embraced her new position. The game describes her as honourable and graceful. During the conversation with Carlyle she is shown to despise disloyalty and while she's respected Carlyle before, he loses her trust by betraying Jehanna and herself. She values loyalty and honesty. In the scene before her death she comes across as a proud person and she is unyielding even though Caellach gives her the opportunity to save her life by handing out the stone. Ismaire, however, decides to keep to her ideals and rather dies than betray herself and the country. Then, while she's dying, she tells us that she loves her son even though she obviously didn't show it. That suggests she is a rather aloof and even cold person on the surface; it could maybe be a result of her husband´s death and the time when she had to adjust to her new situation. Joshua just got lost on the way. And even while dying, she still thinks mainly of Jehanna. She could use the time to tell Joshua more about her feelings and stuff, but she decides to tell him what to do with Jehanna. In a way she is a workaholic as well; her duty never leaves her mind.

She also shows a strong loyalty to her husband. Joshua tells us that he left Jehanna about ten years ago. His father would've died before that. The game says that Ismaire rules Jehanna to honour her husband´s wish. During those 10+ years she hasn't re-married. I imagine that especially after Joshua disappeared, the nobles would've harrassed her to re-marry to provide Jehanna with a new heir. But she didn't relent (just like in the situation with Caellach) and remained true to her principles.

She is also awesome. And tragic.

Now, the last ruler, Mansel:

We only have two short conversations where Mansel appears (which sucks); he seems to be quite intelligent, perceptive (knows what is needed and needs to be done), compassionate and SerenesForest tells us that he is also pious (who would've guessed that!). He is also quite supportive of L'Arachel. It's not exactly like he just gives in to her antics because he doesn't want to deal with them but he fully accepts and even supports them. He says that L'Arachel´s crazy mission is indeed a divine calling and he clearly believes that she can fulfil her mission. He knows her very well and cares about her very much. He was probably a good surrogate parent. In his second conversation -- when he gives the Sacred Weapons to the heroes -- he seems to be rather... laid-back (in a way). He clearly says that the weapons normally are not allowed to leave the temple but since this is a special case, he "tweaks the rules".

It is made clear that Mansel is not a fighter. If it's because he's convinced that violence is wrong or if he's just bad at it, who knows. But when the palace is attacked by Grado, he does stand up and wants to do something (it's not explicitly said what he wants to do. Could be something non-violent). L'Arachel stops him but it shows that he can be courageous as well. It's hard to describe his character but he is awesome in his own right. I mean, I love crack!Mansel and his un-broness, but in-game he is just as awesome as the other rulers.

God, I hope I was coherent. Well, after all that srs bsns, I will say goodbye with this quote:

Selena: Cormag, you and I will bring that traitor down. Go around that fort to the southeast and drive into them from the sea.
Cormag: We're fighting General Duessel? But he's one of the cornerstones of the empire. How could-- He's been like a father to you and to my brother. Do you truly mean to kill him?
